Just a few q’s, because I might just get one.

Are they really that good in both tarmac and dirt?

Can I do a double Bike Flip back flip with it (or is it trickable)?

Any more over 500cc versions? The Aprilla in the lead is 550, but surely there’s still more bikes with that much engine?

There. Also, extra words of wisdom will help.

1. Yes.

2. Can *you* do that? I doubt it, but there’s only one way to be sure.

3. Yes, and that’s way more power than a dirt bike needs, even on street tires.

Words of Wisdom : Get a CRF250l and convert it to a SM if you really want to. If it’s not enough power for you, you aren’t a good enough rider.

1) no, they’re good at neither, and only adequate on tarmac.

2) no, they’re pig heavy

3) singles will be around 400-500, twins will be bigger, and even more pig heavy.

Just a few answers (first two on the Aprilia you mentioned):

Only on Tuesdays. Oh, and only on Tuesdays when the engine isn’t getting rebuilt.

Yep. On your first ride, even! Unless you need to do a rebuild during the trick. Not sure if that really counts as a double back flip.

Sure! You can supermoto a DRBig if you like. Hell, you can do almost anything, really. Maybe a 500 2-stroke is what you want. Big bore that son of a gun. I promise it’ll be enough! (Until it needs a rebuild. Which is gonna be in about 10 miles.)

On the trick: No, I’m not worthy, but maybe Thomas Pages (he does bike flips) can.

Not needing more power, but expressways here in the Philippines will only allow 500cc up.

wow, really? In the US 250cc is the legal limit for restricted access highways... In practice I rode my MZ SM 125 supermoto (125cc, if that wasn’t obvious...) on the interstate all the time because it has no problem going 70mph and keeping up with traffic.

Important note: The 550cc Aprillia v-twins are some of the least fuel-efficient engines currently manufactured in the world. A test by an American internet magazine found that while it was a powerful, smooth, and highly entertaining bike it only got about 35mpg. Yes, you read that right. 35. It also requires premium fuel and only has a 3 gallon fuel tank. That means you only have a range of just over 90miles between fill-ups.

1: yes. But remember you are limited by tires. if your running street slicks, your obviously not going to go as far into the woods as the guy on knobbies. keep a spare set of wheels with the other set of tires

2: yep, but remember, the bigger the bike, the heavier, and the hard to trick

3: not many. KTM might have a one or two. Once you get into ‘big’ supermotos you end up in dual sport territory, which are not the same bikes. The who idea of a super moto is to have a very light and nimble bike.

words of wisdon: GEAR. GEAR GEAR GEAR GEAR!

also, (no idea if you have abike or not already) but start on a smaller machine first. sub 500.

1. Yes but only with proper tires. My supermoto never sees dirt and my dirt bike rarely sees pavement

2. Your only limitation is how hard you braaaap

3. Mine is a CRF450X and it does the job perfectly for me. You can go bigger and get a 600+ KTM supermoto

250L is weak, at least get the 250x and convert it. But what do I know I only ride my CRF450x

CRF450 a lot heavier than the 250X?

My 2012 450X wet is around 270, maybe 285 with the stuff I’ve put on it. But I have it geared tall for supermoto at 15/40 sprockets and it still pulls (stock sprockets are 13/51)

1. Well that’s, like, your opinion, man.

2. That’s illegal in my state.

3. Nobody cares.

What’s illegal? Converting a dirt bike to street?

Yep. California made it illegal in 2004.

How so? I was just in SoCal not long ago and there’s tons of bikes that started life as a dirt bike and were plated for street legal.

There are a lot of dual sports out here, but there aren’t any new plates being given to real dirt bikes. The CRF/WR/KLX/EXC look like dirt bikes from a distance.
